Woodland Garden

Fall 2004, Woodland Garden

The Woodland Garden includes native woodland trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants and forms an extension of the NAACP Freedom Grove Riparian Forest Buffer and Watermen's Garden. Together with these gardens, the Woodland Garden acts as a buffer strip between the wooded slope adjacent to College Creek and the upland school grounds. A woodchip pathway travels through this grove to invite the exploration and observation of this partially-shaded area.

The wildlife habitat, air, and water quality benefits of these trees and shrubs are much greater than the turf grass that was there previously. As they mature, these plants will add to wildlife habitat while contributing shade, slowing and filtering runoff, absorbing water, transpiring water vapor into the air, and cleaning the air.

Plants in the Woodland Garden are those that can handle partial to greater amounts of shade. The garden design has evolved over time by periodically adding plants as they were obtained. Clay Street Computer Learning Center students and other volunteers installed the garden.
